I'm afraid I don't have any personal experience, and in my 10 years in Japan I have only seen one smoked once in public. (Interestingly, it was in a Saty chain shopping center, inside a Mister Donuts fast food restaurant!) Anyway, I did a websearch at Google Japan, and when I put in the Japanese words for kiseru and "how to smoke", I got a bunch of hits. I translated one basic site. It seems you first put just a little tobacco in the pipe bowl. The thing is, there is a special tobacco made just for kiseru that is apparently different from other pipe tobacco; this could make your smoking experience good or bad, I would think, depending on your ability to get this special tobacco. Anyway, then, the site recommends using a hibachi to light it (just like I have seen in old movies), but it says if you don't have that (or, I would imagine, don't want to be troubled with firing a hibachi up just to fire up your kiseru LOL), a lighter will do. It then says take one puff, take another puff, wait a second or two, then take a third puff and exhale. That is it! It says if this is not enough tobacco for you, you can repeat the process, after dumping out the little bit of smoked tobacco in the kiseru bowl. This is how I have seen them smoked in the old movies. Sometimes, people (well, the actors in the movies) would just take one puff and that was it! I kind of wish people could have such a reduced need for tobacco today, and really enjoy it in a social sense, instead of the highly addictive qualities that cigarettes have where a person ends up smoking 40 cigarettes a day, 10-20 puffs each. Here is another website about kiseru with good pics: http://www.geocities.jp/kugurofuto/newpage14.html Hope this helps some. Let us know how it goes. By the way, how did you find our East Smoke Rising Board? It's nice to see new names like yours! CP > Hello! My friend gave me an amazing present for x-mas - > kiseru pipe.
