A followup on the last sighting report. That same day, I went to Ginza and stopped at a tobacco shop where I sometimes buy cigarillos. I was thinking they might have the Ark Royals that I thought the lady I had just seen might have been smoking. I planned to buy a pack and open it up, maybe smoke one to see how strong they are, what they taste like, etc. I got there and didn’t see them at first, but saw some Captain Blacks. I had pretty much ruled those out as a potential “match” (with what she was smoking), but thought what the heck, if they don’t have the Ark Royals, might as well buy the Captain Blacks for kicks. Just when the lady was ringing up my purchase, I spotted the Ark Royals! Plain white, soft pack, with an anchor design in red on the front. I asked for a pack of those, too. After I got home, I opened the Ark Royals up and sure enough, they are without a doubt what the young lady I had spotted was smoking. Cork filter, same color and size as on other cork kings, and a light brown paper wrapper for the rest of the cigarette. I looked at the stats on the side of the pack; sorry, I don’t have them now, but they are pretty strong. the same as Marlboro Reds or even a little stronger. I smoked one and, sure enough with me being a nonsmoker, it gave me a mildly buzzing head in a matter of minutes. Flavor was pretty good, as I guess you would expect for a pipe tobacco cig. I smoked one of the Captain Blacks, too, and it was smoother and better tasting. I had smoked a few a couple years before, when I first saw a quasi-Goth young lady smoke them. (They are called “little cigars”, and so escape the requirement to print tar and nicotine stats on the pack, even though they are a cork filtered cigarette in design.) Well, that made it more interesting about the low- to mid-20s lady who was doing French inhales. Smoking a pipe tobacco cigarette but only after “loading them up” in a nice, fancy, metal case. I wonder if she uses the case because she is kind of embarrased to be smoking a pipe tobacco cigarette, but likes them for their looks and taste (and strength?), or if she uses the case for fashion, or some of both reasons. I wonder how she even found out about them, too. I think I have only seen one or two people smoking them in my more than 10 years in Japan! That includes a lot of time in smoky coffeeshops with a variety of old and young, rich and poor and everthing in between smoking customers. Perhaps her dad smokes them, and thus they became her first brand in her teens and she got stuck on them? |
