Without having thought that much about it, I always assumed the disproportionate amount of YS start smoking stories was because it was harder to write a story about a girl starting at a more advanced age (not a lot of smokers start in their 20s, it seems). I suspect there is truth to what you say.

For me age, doesn't have to matter. I love stories that describe that describe how a girl starts smoking and details her "fall" to addiction. I really love stories where one girl becomes addicted and then convinces (or coerces!) a friend to start as well...especially if the friend is unaware she soon will become addicted to nicotine.

I will say that stories of really, really YS bother me, especially ones where the YS is like 3 or 4.
