Nurses And Others Who Smoke
 Author: Mike March 24, 2006 at 12:17:56
Marcus mentioned in a recent post that his girlfriend is a health care professional. I'm not sure exactly what type of work she does, but his revelation got me thinking about something I have often wondered about.

I've encountered a number of nurses over the years who are heavy smokers. There is something delightfully decadent to me about that, watching a woman who is presumably educated and informed about the destructive effects of smoking enjoy her cigarette. Choosing short term pleasure and immediate gratification over long term health and well being.

Do nurses smoke as a relief from the pressures and tension of the job? Long hours, hectic work schedules, emotional pressures from working with terribly injured or terminally ill patients?

Is it denial? Thinking that somehow the health claims about smoking are exaggerated or overstated? Or that "it will never happen to me"? A false sense of security because although they see some patients with smoking related illnesses those are considered extreme cases because the majority of patients they see who smoke have not yet developed any obvious health problems from their smoking?

Has anyone else noticed that many nurses seem to be heavy smokers?

Not sure where this thread will go but look forward to hearing from others about the subject. I find it fascinating to say the least.

Mike
