I just read an article on cigarette smoking among children, “How Long to Addict a Kid?” A study of 700 twelve and thirteen year old children was reported in September 2000 issue of the journal Tobacco Control. This study identified three groups among these children: · Those children who were instantly in love with smoking and became addicted within days or weeks · Those children who were gradual addicts, taking a month to become addicted · Those children who could smoke up to 5 cigarettes daily but did not show signs of becoming addicted. I wish I could have somehow been included in that study; I’d have been in the fourth group of children—those who were psychologically addicted before they ever tried their first cigarette. I also wish the article I read about that study had included any information as to whether there was a difference in addiction between boys and girls, if one sex felt addiction sooner, or stronger? But I have a guess about that; I think that if they ever did a study comparing boys with girls, it’d be a no-contest win for the girls. I am sure girls become addicted much more easily than boys, and feel the addiction deeper than do boys. I think this is true because the emotional, social, and psychological needs a girl can experience very early in her introduction to smoking makes her more vulnerable. > Anyway, interesting tidbit of news I thought I’d pass along. |
