The game was played without drama and concluded in a score of 35 to nothing. Steve had scored three touchdowns and rushed for almost 200 yards. He had made it look easy.

His teammates tried talking him into joining them for pizza
as they showered but Steve told him he had made other plans
while being careful not to divulge them.

As he walked up the locker room stairs, he saw his parents waiting at the top. His parents grinned proudly as they congratulated him with hugs and words of a game well played. His heart stopped when he saw Linda standing 15 feet away in the crowd. Was she smoking? What would he tell his mother? Another glance put his fears at rest. Unlike his mother, Linda’s fingers were cigarette free.
Steve motioned for Linda to join them as he told his parents about his plans for after the game. His mother smiled through a stream of smoke as she studied the girl her son had asked out. She was pretty and well dressed. She told Linda that she was pleased to meet her and told them both to have a good time.

They talked about the game as he drove them to Denny’s for a late night dinner. Her purse sat by her side undisturbed and he hoped against hope that she would open it and take out her cigarettes. He worried about what he'd tell his parents if they smelled smoke in his car. But nothing happened and he began to wonder if he'd even seen a pack in her purse.
Denny’s was crowded and when the hostess asked if he preferred smoking or non-smoking, he told her he would take the first available seat. Five minutes later she escorted them to a table in the smoking section.
He was enjoying their conversation but had just about talked him self into believing his eyes had deceived him about the cigarettes. Linda fidgeted in her seat. Being with Steve made her nervous and when she was nervous she wanted to smoke. She debated the problem in her head.
She had never smoked in front of any one before, except for tonight when she smoked in front of her parents. She imagined her parent’s look of disappointment plastered across Steve’s face. She heard him ask if she was all right. Did she feel OK?
Linda shuffled in her seat and opened her purse. Steve’s heart began to pound and his saliva dried.

“I have to tell you something and I know you’re not going
to like it,” said Linda.

“What?” asked Steve? “Did I do something wrong? Did I make you mad?”
Linda swallowed as she pulled the pack of Virginia Slims from her purse. “It’s not you. It’s me. I smoke,” she said. “Do you hate me now?”

Steve’s jaw dropped as Linda lit a cigarette and followed
her inhale with a dramatically visual exhale.

“Of course I don’t hate you,” said Steve, trying his best to mask his excitement. “A lot of cool girls smoke. My mom smokes too. You saw her tonight. You look good with a cigarette. When did you start?”
He couldn’t believe he had said it like that. Linda probably thought he was some kind of jerk or pervert. He fully expected her to get up and leave.
“Really,” asked Linda. “It doesn’t bother you that I smoke?”
“Of course not,” said Steve. “I like you for who you are. Smoking doesn’t change that.”

The look of relief on Linda’s face ensured him that he had
said the right thing.

Linda told him about starting a couple months earlier and about her parents catching her after school and giving her permission. It all happened so fast she told him. She didn’t even know if she was addicted but her parents had given her their permission. She told him about the letter her parents would write that would allow her to smoke in school on Monday. She told him she was happy but she was scared. She was afraid people would make fun of her or give her a hard time.
She lit a second cigarette and looked around the dining room as she exhaled a cloud of smoke. She told Steve that she thought every one in the place was staring at her and asked if he thought she looked stupid smoking a cigarette.
Steve assured her that if people were staring at her it was because she looked so pretty. He boosted her confidence by complimenting her on the feminine way she held her cigarette and told her how grown-up and mature she looked.
Linda devoured his compliments as she fished for more. This was going better than expected. She almost felt good about her self as she inhaled another puff.

"You really think I look older?" she asked.

Steve laid the truth on thick. "Yes I do. You look great. I just think it's so cool that your parents know. I mean you're not like some kid sneaking around or something like that. You're like a real grown-up."
Linda beamed as smoke bellowed from her lungs. "My mom says I like it because I'm addicted. She made me sound like a drug addict or something. I guess she'd know because she smokes too."
"So does my mom," offered Steve. "She smokes about three pack a day."

"That's how much my mom smokes too," shrieked Linda,
seemingly thrilled to have something in common with Steve.

"Do you think you'll smoke that much some day?" asked Steve
as he discreetly pushed on his erection under the table.

"I don't know," said Linda. "I really like the way it makes me feel. I wish I could smoke all the time. That sounds terrible doesn't it?"
"No it doesn't," said Steve defensively. "If it makes you feel good you should do it as much as you want."
Linda exhaled the last puff from her cigarette and crushed it out as she smiled coyly at Steve. "What if I wound up smoking five packs a day or something like that? I wouldn't be able to do any thing without a cigarette. Can you imagine how gross my lungs would look if that ever happened? You wouldn't want to date a girl that smoked like that, would you?"
"You're right," said Steve. "I wouldn't want to date a girl that smoked like that. I'd want to marry her."
He couldn't believe he said that. She couldn't believe he said it either but he had and she was lubricating because of it.

"Really?" she asked longingly as she put a cigarette
between her lips and prepared to light it.

Steve stopped her and gently removed the lighter from her hand. A moment passed between them as he lit her cigarette. Linda would remember and treasure that moment for as long as she lived and so would Steve. "Really," he said. "Really I would."
Linda instinctively exhaled a lung full of smoke in Steve's face as he inhaled the cancerous aroma of her chest. And then he kissed her without regard to Denny's other patrons.
It was the first time he'd ever kissed a smoker and he didn't know what to expect but was overjoyed at his tongue's reaction. He told her how wonderful she tasted. She melted in his arms.
For the first time in her life, Linda felt that all was right with the world. How could this have happened? What had she done to deserve so much happiness? She woke up this morning as just another 8th grade girl and look at her now. She was smoking cigarettes and kissing Steve Rose!
The crazy thing about all this was that he liked it! Linda wished she could finger her self right there in the booth. She was as horny as a 13-year-old virgin could get and she felt sexy. What was that they always said about kissing girls that smoked? Kissing a girl that smoked was like kissing an ashtray? Linda put the filter to her lips and pulled as the mentholated smoked flowed across her tongue and filled her mouth. Smoking had always tasted good but now it tasted even better.
Steve watched as the magnificent young lady sitting beside him opened her mouth and swallowed a creamy thick ball of smoke. He watched as it disappeared down her throat only to emerge seconds later through her smiling lips. He kissed her again and told her how beautiful she was.
