Story: CHARLEY'S WOMEN- part 3
 Author: slimv September 26, 2001 at 14:12:32
Jane lit a cigarette and studied her son in the rear view mirror. “Nervous?” she asked.

“Just a little,” said Charlie.

She took a big drag from her cigarette. The smoke felt heavy inside her lungs. She heard them wheeze as she exhaled. She wondered if she should have forbid Charley to take this smoking girl out. She knew how persuasive bad girls could be. She took another deep puff and rethought her thoughts. She was already calling Katy Gingrich a bad girl just because she smoked. She had never even met the girl.
“Charlie, just because your father and I are letting you take this girl out; it doesn’t mean we’ll allow you to smoke. Do you understand me?”
“I don’t smoke Mom. I promise.”
“I know you don’t Honey. I just want to make sure you never start.”
“Its right here Mom. The green house on the left.”
Jane followed her son’s instructions and pulled into the driveway. She put the car in park and lit another cigarette.

“Back in a minute”, said Charlie as he let him self out and
closed the door.

Jane took a deep puff and wiped a tear from the corner of her eye. Her little boy was growing up.
She didn’t have to wait long. She was only halfway through her cigarette when the front door opened and Charlie emerged with Katy. Jane had expected a black t-shirt and maybe a nose ring. After all, she had to rebellious. What kind of parents would allow their 14-year-old daughter to smoke cigarettes in this day and age? For that matter, Katy was smoking with her parent’s permission two years ago at the tender age of 12. She was holding a freshly lit cigarette but this girl was not what she expected. The girl dropped her un-smoked cigarette and ground it out with her boot as Charlie opened the door.
A clean head of long blonde hair made its way inside the car followed by a plaid skirt and blue oxford. She may have been the preppiest girl Jane had ever laid eyes on. “Hello Mrs. Torrance. I’m Katy”, said a polite bubbly voice.
“Its nice to meet you Katy. You can call me Jane if you like. And you didn’t have to put out your cigarette. You can smoke in the car if you want. I smoke too.”
“Thanks Mrs. Torrance. I wasn’t sure. Charley told me you smoked, but a lot of parents don’t like to see kids smoking.”
Katy opened her purse and exposed a pack of Pall Malls. “Oh shoot, she said as she took out the pack. I forgot my lighter.”
Charley seized the opportunity and presented his mother’s blue Bic. “I’ve got a light”, he said.
Jane watched in the rearview mirror as her son lit Katy. She watched the girl bat her eyes for real and thank him.

“Do you smoke too?” asked Katy.

“Naw,” said Charley. “I just grabbed the lighter from home in case you forgot yours.”
Jane watched as they smiled at each other. She felt good for her son but she was also worried. This polite and pretty young girl was nothing like she imagined. Obviously her son was taken with her. However, the Pall Malls were another story. She must have looked at them wrong. Didn’t Charley say Katy smoked Virginia Slims? She watched as Katy pulled the unfiltered cigarette from her lips. She had seen correctly.

“So tell me Katy, how long have you been smoking?” asked
Jane.

Jane watched in the rearview mirror as Katy’s cheeks drew deep around the unfiltered Pall Mall. She inhaled and exhaled with ease. It reminded Jane of when she used to have healthy pink lungs. Smoking was so easy back then. Judging by the way she inhaled her lungs will look and feel like mine before she graduates high school.
“Six years,” said Katy proudly. “I started when I was 8.”
“You’re kidding!” gasped Jane. “You started smoking when you were 8?”
“My older sister got me started. She thought it was cute. My parents found out when I was 10. They would have grounded my sister for life but she had already gone away to college. I wanted to quit, but I just couldn’t do it. I’m so addicted. Its really awful.”

“How much do you smoke Honey?” asked a concerned Jane.

“I usually smoke two packs a day on school days and three packs a day on weekends and holidays. I know it sounds like a lot, but I really need them. But I’m hoping these will help me cut down”, she said lifting the Pall Mall in the air. “They’re unfiltered so they’re really strong. I figure I won’t have to smoke as much if I smoke these.”
Jane was chilled by the little girl’s words. “I’m sorry for sounding so surprised, but I’ve never seen a girl as young as you smoke unfiltered cigarettes. I don’t think I’ve even tried them my self. They must be awful.”
Thick clouds of smoke danced from Katy’s mouth as she laughed. “My parents said the same thing when I started smoking them. They’re really good though. Would you like to try one?”
Jane was an adult, but it sounded as if Katy had issued her a challenge. She liked her Benson & Hedges just fine. They tasted great and she was loyal to her brand but what would it hurt? She couldn’t allow her self to be outdone by a fourteen-year-old girl. “Sure Katy. I’d love to try one.”
Charley squirmed in his seat as Katy shook loose a Pall Mall from her pack and handed it to his mother. He didn’t know why but it really excited him. He watched with anticipation as his mother placed the unfiltered cigarette between her lips and lit it. He knew nothing about cigarettes except that he liked the way girls looked when they smoked them. Katy and his mom were talking about how strong the Pall Malls were. He supposed they tasted better if they were stronger.
The situation seemed almost surreal. He was sitting in the back seat of his mother’s car with Katy Gringrich and she was smoking. Not only that, but Katy had just given his mom one of her cigarettes. Regardless of how you looked at it, it was really cool.
He thought it was neat that his mother accepted his girlfriend as a smoker. He knew Katy wasn’t his girlfriend but he liked the way it sounded. And maybe she liked him too. After all, she was with him now.
His penis bulged against his jeans. He wanted to touch him self but knew better. His mother had cracked her window but it wasn’t enough to combat the smoke that was circling inside the car. The smoke smelled good to him. He still couldn’t get over the idea of seeing his girlfriend smoking with his mom. It turned him on but it also made him jealous.
His breathing shortened and became shallower. He watched as Katy dumped an ash in the door’s ashtray. Her legs were crossed beneath her plaid skirt. Her Gucci purse sat beside her with the pack of Pall Malls clearly visible. He wanted to ask her for a cigarette. Why should she object? After all, didn’t she ask him if she smoked? And what would his mother say? He knew what she would say. But maybe she’d make an exception just this once. Maybe she wouldn’t even notice. But what fun would that be? If he was going to smoke, he wanted her to see it. Maybe she would like him more if he smoked.
Jane’s lungs wretched but she fought the urge to cough. She wouldn’t allow her self to be beaten by this preppie juvenile girl. She took another puff. Much better she thought as she followed it with a third. Her lips turned up in a smile. Why hadn’t she tried these earlier? The unfiltered smoke was so much more robust. It filled her lungs with warmth and pleasure. What would Jack say if she came home with a pack of these?
“You’re right,” said Jane. “These are good. As a matter of fact, they’re really good.”
Another convert thought Katy as she smiled and took another deep puff. This time she purposely exhaled in Charley’s face. The smell of her breath, the direct hit in his face, these were too much for him to stand. He groaned against his tightened muscles as hot sticky semen rushed his underwear. He looked down to see a small but deep dark stain forming around the zipper of his jeans. Katy saw it too and smiled deviously.
Jane saw Katy’s exhale in the rear view mirror and choked on her smoke. She coughed hard but her chest wouldn’t loosen. Why had Katy done that? Why had she blown her smoke all over Charley’s face?
“Are you alright?” asked Katy. The look on her face was innocent but Jane could see past her blue doe eyes.
Jane thumped her chest and cleared her throat. “Yes, I guess I inhaled too deep. These are really strong.” They were strong but that wasn’t the problem. Perhaps she should say something to this juvenile vixen. But what if she were wrong? She didn’t want to make a mountain out of a molehill and she didn’t want to embarrass her son. After all, Charley knew right from wrong. Didn’t he?
Jane took a left in to the movie theater and pulled up to the curb. Charley got out of the car and held the door for Katy.
“Thanks for the ride Mom,” said Charley. “Can you pick us up around 5:00 at Nappoli’s?”
“I’ll be there,” said his mother. “It was nice meeting you Katy. I hope the two of you have a good time.”
Katy smiled at her as she blew a thick cone of smoke. “It was nice meeting you too.”
That girl is definitely trouble thought Jane as she pulled away. As much as she distrusted Katy, she had really liked the Pall Malls. The unfiltered flavor still hung on her tongue. She knew they were much worse for her than the Benson & Hedges she smoked, and that just made them all the more better! She pulled into a convenience store and bought three packs of Pall Malls.
They were about an hour into the “The Sixth Sense” and Katy’s body was beginning to revolt. She thought about how nice it would be to be able to smoke in the theater, but it was just a thought. She took a drink of Pepsi and laid her head on Charley’s shoulder.
Charley was having a difficult time concentrating on the movie. His nose was preoccupied with the smell of smoke that clung to Katie’s long blond hair. He felt her hand take hold of his and he squeezed it in the dark.
They didn’t stay to see the credits. Katy stood up and pulled Charley down the aisle and out of the theater. She opened her purse as they walked and by the time the door closed behind them Katy had a cigarette between her lips and was begging Charley to light her.
She smoked two cigarettes as they walked across the parking lot to Nappoli’s holding hands. She was still smoking as they walked inside the restaurant. Nappoli’s was a popular hang out with the kids from school and the place was jumping with kids they both knew. Names were called and hands were waved. Two of Charley’s friends were there and they were sitting in the non-smoking section. He waved to them as the hostess led them to the smoking section.
Charley ordered a small Pepperoni pizza for both of them and lit Katy’s cigarette. He was amazed at how comfortable she was with her habit. He couldn’t imagine being at such ease if he were smoking in public. But then again, every one knew Katy Gingrich smoked. They would have been shocked to see her sitting in the non-smoking section. She smiled at him through her smoke and he felt like such a big deal just being with her. He hoped his friends had seen him lighting her cigarette.
Katie smoked while she ate and Charley couldn’t help but wonder how she would taste when and if he kissed her. He thought about kissing his mom. He had liked that a lot, but did he like it because his mom was smoking or because it was his mom? Maybe it was both.
The waitress cleared the table leaving behind two glasses of Pepsi, Katy’s pack of Pall Malls, an ashtray and his lighter. Charley studied the cigarettes and the lighter as they sat on the table. They were in plain site of every one and they looked so taboo. They seemed to mock him as they sat there. Touch me if you dare they seemed to say. You’re too young. You’re a momma’s boy. You’d cough if you tried us and every one would laugh at you. You’re not adult enough to smoke us.
It was as if Katy had been reading his mind. She picked up the pack of Pall Malls and shook one loose. Charley immediately picked up the lighter and did his duty. She inhaled deeply. The look on her face told every one that saw her that she had mastered the habit of smoking and enjoyed it tremendously.
“Would you like to try a puff?” asked Katy seductively. She held the cigarette in his direction enticing him to smoke from her hand.
Charley’s brain buzzed with thoughts of temptation and self gratification and he realized this was his moment of truth. He wanted to put his lips around the moist paper. He wanted to smoke from Katy’s hand. He knew that he shouldn’t. He knew that his friends were sitting across the room studying his every move. As much as he wanted too, he couldn’t bring him self any closer to her hand. He shook his head no. The look on her face couldn’t hide her disappointment.
He felt like such a loser standing on the curb with Katy waiting for his mother to pick them up. His mother was five minutes late and it felt like five years. They drove the distance without speaking. When they pulled into her driveway, he let him self out and walked Katy to the door.
She told Charley that she had a good time. He asked if she’d like to go out with him again some time. He felt his heart crash as she wrinkled her nose and shook her head no. She reached out her hand to shake and Charley took it. So this was how it ended. If only he had it to do over again, he would have wrapped his lips around that cigarette and pulled for all he was worth. He turned around and walked back to the car.
Jane knew the date hadn’t gone well and she could see her son wasn’t up to talking about it. It hurt her to know her son was in such pain. She silently cursed Katy Gingrich as she lit a Pall Mall.

His mom’s new brand wasn’t lost on him as he watched her
exhale from his seat in the back.
